Small Steps Can Add Up to Big Change

Sometimes, we feel paralyzed in the face of our dreams.  We know what we want, but we can’t figure out how to get there all at once.  So, instead of taking a small step forward today, we do nothing…and wait for a “better” opportunity tomorrow.

The problem is, of course, that tomorrow might never come.  Or the opportunity may not present itself tomorrow, or be as good as it is right now.

So we feel frustrated and defeated because we haven’t achieved the goals or dreams that we thought would bring us greater success and happiness.

I’m challenged by this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“One of the illusions of life is that the present hour is not the critical, decisive hour.  Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year.”

His point is that today is the day…and that now is the moment of opportunity, if only we’d seize it by taking a step forward.  I think his use of the word “illusion” is right on.  We deceive or trick ourselves into thinking that small steps forward won’t make a big difference in the end.

But in reality, no step is too small. No action is insignificant.

I just love this quote from Betty Reese:

“If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito.”

Her point? Little things make a big difference! Deep down, we know this, right?  So why don’t we live it more often?

Small amounts of money, set aside regularly over time, add up to big savings.  Regular moments of quality time (no matter how short or long) with someone you love add up to a great relationship. And small steps, taken on a regular basis, achieve great things.
