The Power of a Sense of Urgency

Urgency – How do we keep it and harness it’s power to make change in our lives?  That’s the topic for today’s Monday Motivator from Life Compass Blog.

But first…if you live in the U.S. as I do, I hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend!

I hate to admit it, but I’ve gotten a bit lazy lately.  No, I’m not talking about exercise, but about a few goals I’ve had, but haven’t really focused any energy or attention on for a while.

Back when these goals and desires first came into my mind, I had great passion and a drive to accomplish them.  But over time, I lost that “lovin’ feeling.”  What was once a big interest – something I just had to do – is now just a passing thought. [Read more...]

Best Home-Based Business Opportunities

2638497254e559e68e69a16cae64e36c Best Home Based Business OpportunitiesLast time, in What is the Best Business to Start?, I shared some tips on how to identify the kind of business that is right for you. And I told you about some of the growth industries that are ideal for new business start-ups.

Today, I want to share a list of some of the best home-based business opportunities.

These small businesses require little start-up money, have few licensing requirements (in most cases), and can be done in your own home by yourself without having to hire additional help (unless you want to, of course):

  • Internet Marketing – Selling products and services on the Internet via email, a blog, or web site.  Lynn Terry’s Self-Starters Weekly Tips is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to build an Internet-based business from start to profit.  For web domain name registration and web site hosting, we recommend Bluehost, GoDaddy, or Host Gator.
  • Personal Organization – Helping others organize their personal and/or work life. [Read more...]

What is the Best Business to Start?

0f9cb1d7dc4f4e7a3404207098e4200d What is the Best Business to Start? In my last post, Is now a good time to be your own boss?, we explored the growing trend of laid-off workers in America, especially 40- to 60-year olds, who are giving up the job search and starting their own business.

If you’re unemployed, there are several good reasons why it may make sense for you to start a small business instead of finding another job:

  1. The average job search lasts a year or more, so in the time it takes to find a job, you could get a great start on your own business.
  2. If you do find a new job, you’re still at risk of another lay-off…maybe even more at risk because now you’re one of the newest employees.
  3. Chances are good that your new job would likely pay less than you were making before.  By starting your own business, you’ll have more control over your earning potential and your financial future.

But even if you’re happily employed, or feel trapped in a job you hate, if you’ve ever wanted to strike out on your own, now may be a great time to start a business.

What is the best business to start in a down economy?

So, what is the best small business to start in a down economy? It really depends!  You probably figured I was going to say that.

There are several different kinds of businesses, and the one that’s right for you will depend on several factors, including your current financial situation, the economy or market in your area, and your personal passions and interests. [Read more...]

Is Now a Good Time to Be Your Own Boss?

e3581a4c756c4272734bb09b5a96dccc Is Now a Good Time to Be Your Own Boss?Is now a good time to be your own boss?  Apparently, it is for 40- to 60-somethings!  A recent story in my local newspaper reported that more 40- to 60-somethings who lost jobs in the recession are now working for themselves.

What’s interesting to me is that many of these folks, when they started their careers 20 or more years ago, figured they’d be financially set once they got into a good company.

Back in the “good old days,” many people basically worked for one place their entire lives.  Not so today!  These 40- to 60-somethings, who grew up under that old reality, have watched it quickly disappear.

More middle-aged and older men, who lost their jobs during the recession, are starting businesses than woman, or people in any other age category.  The reason is that about 80% of the jobs lost nationwide in recent years (in manufacturing, construction and other male-dominated industries) were held by men. Best Gift for Graduates: Financial Freedom

42b02edd23900e37ff38214b1a88b711 Best Gift for Graduates: Financial FreedomAre you looking for the best gift for high school or college graduates this year?  Give them the gift of financial freedom!  Truly, it’s the gift that will keep on giving for a lifetime!  What do I mean?  Read on…

The months of May and June seem filled with high school and college graduations in our area.  It’s a time to celebrate what students have accomplished in school, and a time to encourage them as they go out into the world to set their own course.

This weekend at church, our pastor invited all the high school seniors up onto the stage so the congregation could congratulate them and pray a blessing over them.

Next, he did something I thought was unique and very fitting.  He gave each grad a copy of Dave Ramsey’s book, The Total Money Makeover:  A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness.  Dave Ramsey, a financial expert who has touched the lives of millions through his radio and TV shows, has been a good friend of our church over the years, as we have hosted many of his speaking events. How to Handle Frustration and Disappointment in Life

3677d9ab833f953682b9e82eb6c179fc How to Handle Frustration and Disappointment in LifeFor those of you who are new to Life Compass, I write on Spirituality, Faith and Ethics on Sundays.  Here’s why.

A friend of mine, Pat McLaughlin, recently wrote a book called Haggai and Friends, which is due to be released in the next month or so.  It’s based on the biblical account of the Hebrew prophet Haggai, who brings the people of Israel an interesting word from the Lord.

In Haggai 1:5-7 (The Message), God tells the people:

Take a good hard look at your life. Think it over. You have spent a lot of money, but you haven’t much to show for it. You keep filling your plates, but you never get filled up. You keep drinking and drinking and drinking, but you’re always thirsty. You put on layer after layer of clothes, but you can’t get warm. And the people who work for you, what are they getting out of it? Not much – a leaky, rusted-out bucket, that’s what. That’s why God-of-the-Angel-Armies said:  “Take a good, hard look at your life.  Think it over.”

Have you ever been frustrated because your life hasn’t turned out the way you’d hoped or wanted?  Like the examples given in this scripture, have you been busy doing lots of stuff, but have nothing to really show for it? [Read more...]
