Is it Easier to Plan Your Vacation than Your Life?

dba6c0c1b4a6992e77b772a4192697f7 Is it Easier to Plan Your Vacation than Your Life?I’ve mentioned before that I’m a big fan of the late Jim Rohn. He was a world-renown author and speaker who inspired millions with his personal rags-to-riches story and down-to-earth business philosophy.

You can read my tribute to Jim Rohn if you’d like.

One quote of his, in particular, has stuck with me for years, and has motivated me to live my life with greater focus and purpose:

I find it fascinating that most people plan their vacations with better care than they plan their lives.  Perhaps that is because escape is easier than change. — Jim Rohn

Warren Buffett’s Investment Advice: Invest in Yourself

3da87ccd084cd1cbf75cbe9e8e0c79ce Warren Buffetts Investment Advice: Invest in Yourself

Warren Buffett, on the best investment you can make

Warren Buffett, one of America’s wealthiest people, is famously followed for his investing views and strategies.

And why not?  As chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, Buffett has led his company, through acquisitions and investments, to exponential growth.  A $1,000 investment in Berkshire Hathaway in 1959 is worth $25 million today!

And yet Buffett, known as the “Oracle of Omaha,” is now talking about an investment that is even greater.  During the Q&A session at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting in 2008, Buffett said:

The most important investment you can make is in yourself. Very few people get anything like their potential horsepower translated into the actual horsepower of their output in life. Potential exceeds realization for many people…The best asset is your own self. You can become to an enormous degree the person you want to be.

Finding Strength in Difficult Times

President Gerald R. Ford

For those of you who are new to Life Compass, I write on Spirituality, Faith and Ethics on Sundays.  Here’s why.

Last week, I took one of my sons on a visit to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, which is located in our community of Grand Rapids, MI.

We’ve been there many times – mostly on the president’s birthday, when admission is free.

One year, for his 90th birthday, we even got to hear the president speak.  This time, we went on Mrs. Ford’s birthday, and yes, there was free admission…and free birthday cake.

Despite my frequent visits, I noticed something on this occasion that I hadn’t recalled seeing before.  At least two of the exhibits referenced something that was a source of strength and courage for President Ford during the most difficult moments of his life and presidency.

What was it that he turned to when faced with difficult challenges and decisions?  What was it that made such a difference in Ford’s life?  [Read more...]

How Much “Stupid Tax” Have You Paid?

d02ff3240db9fc7d9e4c2cbf465b15df How Much Stupid Tax Have You Paid?Today, April 15, is tax day in the U.S.  It’s the day to pay the piper…er…the federal, state and local governments the taxes that are due.

I don’t want to depress you, any further than you already are, by talking about how much money you’ve paid in taxes to the government.

But I do want to talk about a concept that TV and radio personality Dave Ramsey calls “Stupid Tax.”

Stupid Tax is the money we’ve spent (wasted) on decisions that ended up being financial mistakes or errors in judgment that cost us more than we bargained for.

Have you ever made a rush decision to buy something that seemed like a great deal at the time, but later you regretted? Like… [Read more...]

Napoleon Hill’s Formula for Success for Achieving Your Goals and Dreams

bc7d7de34fb75015e2e86dc57aa03b64 Napoleon Hills Formula for Success for Achieving Your Goals and Dreams

Napoleon Hill, Author of Think & Grow Rich

Is there a formula for success that anyone can follow to be successful in their life and work, and achieve their goals and dreams?

That’s the question Napoleon Hill famously decided to answer.  In the early 1900′s, acting on the suggestion of Andrew Carnegie, Hill interviewed 500 wealthy and successful people, many of them millionaires, to see if he could determine what, if anything, they had in common.

You might recognize the names of some of the people he interviewed. Many were the most famous people of his time, including Thomas Edison, George Eastman, Alexander Graham Bell, Elmer Gates, Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller, Charles M. Schwab, William Wrigley Jr., F. W. Woolworth, William Jennings Bryan, Theodore Roosevelt, William H. Taft, [Read more...]

Don’t Fritter Away Your Life

For those of you who are new to Life Compass, I write on Spirituality, Faith and Ethics on Sundays.  Here’s why.

My oldest son turned 13 in December, so I decided I’d make some time each week over the course of this year to have some fun with him and talk about things that will help prepare him for manhood. We call it “man-to-man time.”

We usually play basketball at the YMCA (he always whips my bum), go out for breakfast, and then go to my office where we read a chapter from the Proverbs in the Bible and a book called Boyhood and Beyond by Bob Schultz.

If you’re familiar with Proverbs, you know there’s so much wisdom here that covers just about every aspect of life. We especially enjoy reading it from The Message, which is a paraphrase of the Bible in [Read more...]
