Why Busyness Doesn’t Equal Productivity or Success

184edde27e991e9fd6484a11adb8d92c Why Busyness Doesnt Equal Productivity or SuccessIf busyness equaled success, I’d be one of the most successful people in the world – what about you?

I can stay busy with plenty to do in my work, family/home life, and in other personal interests (like writing this blog).

For me, it is easy to fall into the trap that says “Because I’m busy and a hard worker, I’m productive and will be successful.”

But I’ve learned over time that this is not true.  Not everything I can do will lead to success. [Read more...]

How to Reduce Stress

3677d9ab833f953682b9e82eb6c179fc How to Reduce Stress

Don't Let This Happen to You!

For many of us, stress is a major enemy of work-life balance.  If we want to achieve and maintain balance in all areas of our lives, we need to learn effective ways to reduce stress – and even eliminate it.

Executive mentor Bobb Biehl says that as high as 85% of the stress we feel in life is caused by:

  1. Indecision
  2. Lack of control

I absolutely have found this to be true in my own life. What about you?

Stress from Indecision

I can point to several instances where indecision on my part has created a lot of stress in my life and the lives of others, and where indecision on the part of others has created stress in my life. [Read more...]

Think You’re Too Young, Too Old, or Too Late to Achieve Your Dreams?

5f76473ac7608143a58b886fa7a058ea Think Youre Too Young, Too Old, or Too Late to Achieve Your Dreams?I wrote this originally as a guest post on Free Money Finance on February 5, 2010.

Have you ever felt like you’re too young, too old or too late to make a serious change in your life – like finally getting out of debt, finding work you were meant to do, starting the business you’ve always wanted, or living your dream lifestyle?

I think most of us have been there at one time or another.  We think our dreams or goals are out of reach because of the situation or circumstances we find ourselves in.  Or we believe the lies that we’re not qualified, gifted, talented, rich, or knowledgeable enough to do it.

Earlier this year, I re-read The Rhythm of Life: Living Every Day with Passion and Purpose, by Matthew Kelly.

In the book, Kelly offers an inspiring list of now-famous people who didn’t let their age or stage of life stop them from achieving their dreams and living a life of significance: [Read more...]

I Don’t Care What They Say About Me!

14f7299c43afb9fbba2bf6fa5eb09961 I Dont Care What They Say About Me!I really couldn’t care less about what you or others say or think about me!

Now, don’t get me wrong – It’s not that I don’t want to be liked or well thought of. But I’ve decided that what you think or say shouldn’t determine who I am, how I think about myself, or even how I respond to you.

Do you know anyone who worries about what others think, or is still mad at someone else for something they said many years ago?  Yeah, me too.

The subject came up recently in our family, as one of our kids was angry at another over something that was said about them.  To my wife and me, the person who was angry should have had a sense of humor and just shrugged it off.  Instead, he allowed it to consume him, and he sought revenge. Finding Inspiration in the Black Hills

756d7d1275d52653de340a8262ca1d71 Finding Inspiration in the Black HillsHave you ever gone for a walk, hike, bike ride, or a drive when you’re contemplating a major decision or life change, or when you need some extra inspiration?

Or have you ever noticed that you get some great ideas or find clarity about a situation when you’re out in the great outdoors, even if you weren’t specifically thinking about the issue at the time?  I know I have.

This weekend I’m traveling for my job in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  I get out here several times each year and always love being here, no matter the season.  There’s something special about these mountains. Native Americans believe the Black Hills are sacred. And as I drive or hike in the mountains, I always feel a greater sense of awe for, and a closer connectedness to, the Creator.

I think there’s something about being outside, in the beauty of creation, that reminds us that our source of strength and inspiration, and our power to change our lives, doesn’t come from ourselves, but from a power that is much larger and greater. [Read more...]

Your Habits: Friend or Foe?

One of my mentors gave me this many years ago.  I don’t know who authored it, but it speaks to how powerful our habits are to shape us for better or worse.

Who Am I?

You may know me, I’m your constant companion. I’m your greatest helper, I’m your heaviest burden.  I’ll push you onward or drag you down to failure.  I’m at your command.

Half the tasks you do, you might as well turn over to me.  I’ll be able to do them real quickly.  I’ll do them the same every time, if that’s what you want.  I’m easily managed, all you must do is be firm with me.  Show me exactly how you want it done.  After a few lessons, I’ll do it for you automatically.
